I have been enjoying the artworks of Nathan Oliveira and David Park. The new series of oil paintings are influenced by their style and the drawings by Matt. The paintings are whimsical, absurd look at the figures, offering multiple interpretations.

During the month of July I had an opportunity to explore sculpture in wood. These were created with the theme in mind. As often happens with new medium every piece was very exciting to make. The adaptation of pieces that were the negatives of the shapes, scraps of beautiful patterns and the images in the back of my mind have been the muses for these creations.

I have not worked in clay lately, but started playing around in 2d medium. This drawing is inspired by a dance performance I have seen not that long ago. I was fascinated by the muscles of one of the female performers. One could see each strand elongated all along her legs and arms. This made her body look very sculptural and emotional. When she moved her body revealed anatomical designs and the second later they would disappear again.

For those of you who chose to enjoy the fabulous weather instead of art, here are the pictures. It is always better to see them live, of course, but who would blame you for enjoying the sun :)

This is called Dancing mood. The white glaze is my first textured glaze so far. I would really like to explore more of these volcanic glazes that could also create creator-like visual effects on the surface of the sculptures.

Desahogo
From the series of open mouth. This piece is about conversing, but not necessary with words. The hot is spouting out of the mouth, but the rest is unclear still.

Giraffe/mermaid
This creature has received a lot of attention.
The femininity and warm colors make it quite pleasurable to look at.

Speechless margamot
This piece is in progress, but it has an owner, who herself is a fascinating artist - Diana Ruiz.

Hot off the easel!
A collaboration piece between Dilcia Giron and yours truly.

Collaborations have been a fun way to explore new directions and understand better what I prefer in my work. Unless it is challenged by another person I might overlook these intrinsically important elements of my style. At the same time letting go and allowing another person to lead the conversation challenges me to work in other directions.

I was addicted to the extrusion tool for this piece.

Continuation of the theme with faces.

A Vase, red clay, glazes, high fire
Wiping off the glaze creates this interesting metallic effect.
In this piece the top layer of the glaze has flopped
down and made layers of colors.

This two sided sculpture was also made with the extrusion tool.
This is the man's face and the woman's face is on the other side
with their hair interlaced. I have just realized that this description
matches the Abramovic work, which I really like.
May be it crept in unconsciously :)

On the inside part of this sculpture is a monochromatic drawing
of trees and birds and the curtain floating through the window on the other side.

The most "Colorful Creature" (clay, glaze, low fire) out of these.
Definitely influenced by contemporary artworks that I see around.
Otherwise he is very joyful and funny and silent :)

Using collages as an intermediate part of the creative process I have done an aquatint and a drawing. The first one was created based on the the faces I have been morphing by changing the features likes eyes and lips. This drawing is created with a pen.

The collage for the aquatint was born, because of the photograph from the National Geographic of a woman with the most sad-angry eyes. As you might have noticed (or not) the imagery of the open mouth keeps coming to the artwork I create. I am still looking for the correct interpretation in words for its persistence. In this work the insects are representative of words. Would love to read your interpretations.

This is a new medium for me. The plate is created with cardboard and collage of paper, glue, acrylic materials, cutouts and such. After the plate is sealed the ink is smeared and then taken off with tarlatan. There is always an element of surprise as to how the image will print and it is nearly impossible (at least for me) to create an identical print. :)

Seems that I can't get enough of watercolors lately. I enjoy this medium surprisingly enough as it is quite different from oil. The fluidity and transparency of colors give it a challenge to work with and at the same time an effect that can not be done with oils.

Mail Art

I have been participating in the Mail Art during April organized by Art Clash Collective
So far i have done three pieces and one more to go. I have only received one myself as they are delayed with the mail forwarding.

This is a fun experience, as I have always wanted to participate in such event. It's the expectation of receiving the mail (and it's not a junk mail :) as well as sending your art piece into the world without knowing anything about the person it will reach. I would love to do this year round, so if you are an artist and would like to join just holler.

These are the little creations I have sent out:

Teapots in bubbles, colored pens on paper, 3" x 4" (this piece went to Phildadelpia)

This was fun to do. I like teapots as you might have guessed and plan on doing more artwork with teapots.
